Hi,

I'm working on a Sun a Netra T1125 for a project, Ultra 60 m/b.
It's running FreeBSD Sparc 11 rel, packages built, including
vnc server and more. It has 16 x 128MB, 2GB, but running zfs,
could really do with some more. Were there any 256Mb simms
made that will fit this machine and if so, would 4mB total work,
supported or not. Has anyone tried this ?...

Thanks,

Chris

If it has an Ultra 60 motherboard, it only supports up to 128MB DIMMs
according to the Ultra 60 Reference Manual:

https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19127-01/ultra60.ws/805-1762-11/805-1762-11.pdf

"DIMM sizes of 16-, 32-, 64-, and 128-Mbytes are supported. Therefore,
the minimum capacity for a bank of four DIMMs is 64 Mbytes and the
maximum capacity is 512 Mbytes."

The maximum capacity there is per-bank, so with four banks the max is 2GB.

Cheers,

Jesse

Thanks for that and yes, all the docs do say 2GB, but wondered if
anyone had tried more and found it to work. I guess the limiting
factor might be the availability of 256Mb or more dimms, 5v, ecc,
perhaps fast page mode as well, like some of the early Alpha boxes.

ZFS will use all the ram it can find and usually likes more than
2Gb for best performance. Currently thrashing it rsyncing 2.4Tb
from the lab server to a zfs raidz array of 5 x 900Gb sas drives.
It's partly a reliability test for FreeBSD and zfs Sparc,
which has now been dropped from mainstream, though the 11
Rel version seems pretty solid. Will do a comparison of all the
copied files once it's complete.

Power is starting to be an issue and some of the older machines
were reasonable in that respect, while still being good enough
for light duty nfs or web server use...
