the first occurrence of the phrase "eternal september" is attributed to
john william chambless <***@whale.st.usm.edu> in a usenet article
posted wednesday 9 february 1994 00:23:47 UT to "alt.folklore.computers"
under the namesake subject header "the eternal september", which begins:
"here we go again... isn't it lovely that usenet isn't just the 'toy of
the intellectual elite' anymore?" . . . the author of this famous title
(b. 10 april 1959, gulfport) is apparently still living but considering
the unintended "never ending" meme which became the trademark of usenet,
has probably heard more about this quip than anyone could possibly need
(although commercial usenet providers might owe this guy some royalties)

Ted Benoit
Thierry "Ted" Benoit (25 July 1947 – 30 September 2016) was a French
comic artist, graphic novelist and prominent figure in the stylish
Franco-Belgian ligne claire comics scene in the 1980s. His influences
included Edgar P. Jacobs, Moebius, Robert Crumb and to a lesser extend
Jacques Tardi.[1]
Among his works from the 1980s are Bingo Bongo et son Combo Congolais,
a series about aspiring novelist Bingo B. Bongo and his travails; and
Ray Banana, a film noir pastiche. Some of these were published in
English in Heavy Metal.
Benoit illustrated two books in the Blake and Mortimer series, both
written by Jean Van Hamme: The Francis Blake Affair, 1996; and The
Strange Encounter, 2001. Benoit died on 30 September 2016 at the age
of 69.[2][3]

hmm... this popular long-retention newsserver "news.blueworldhosting.com"
shows nearly four-hundred thousand articles in the past twenty-one years:

with over two hundred (209) of those within the past three weeks, since 1
september 2024, and above two thousand (2067) since monday 1 january 2024;
but i'm using 40tude dialog 2.0.15.41 . . . could be e-s or t-bird client?
might try other free newsservers and/or another newsreader, some examples . . .

Server: news.eternal-september.org (11) *requires login, tor disabled
there are other free news servers, some of which are known to work
with tor/ssl/port563, albeit posting may not work with/without tor;
many free newsservers store articles for only about one year, some
even less, but others have longer retention, so the best way is to
test them; add as many servers as you like, and get complete group
list for each; at this writing news.alt119.net, paganini.bofh.team,
news.usenet.ovh, freenews.netfront.net, news.novabbs.org, and some
others (see news:alt.free.newsservers) should be added to the list;
pick one popular newsgroup and download all headers on each server
for comparison; the server i've been using regularly on "localhost"
has less than one year of article retention, but connects securely
via omnimix and using tor browser, socks 5, implicit ssl, port 563

How many of those almost-395000 articles were Thai-language spam entered
via Google Gropes in the months around the end of 2023 - start of 2024?
So, I whipped up this little Python script, and it's spitting out
these numbers:

1990 1
1992 2
1993 18
1994 15
1995 15
2000 3
2001 1
2002 5
2003 15231
2004 30633
2005 27226
2006 26149
2007 35609
2008 31007
2009 20524
2010 16071
2011 26193
2012 23437
2013 30208
2014 25582
2015 15824
2016 19152
2017 15475
2018 12395
2019 6022
2020 7137
2021 4153
2022 3357
2023 1453
2024 1694 (up until the mid of the year, approximately)

. Looks like we were not exactly drowning in Thai spam around
those days. But hey, I threw this code together faster than
you can say "In-N-Out Burger", so take it with a grain of salt!

For a comparison, here are my stats for "de.test":

2016 11480
2017 9490
2018 5748
2019 4541
2020 4514
2021 5885
2022 3658
2023 1451931

. Now, /that's/ what I call "Thai spam"!

Just for giggles, you could take a look at some of the comp.lang groups,
.cobol, .fortran and .c for instance.
Thank you Google for finally stopping the flood of effluent you had
previously enabled - several other Newsserver admins were talking about
not accepting anything input via GG - but shame on you for not accepting
articles from other news servers after that date.
A search engine refusing to accept valid data? Shame on you.

probably among the most prolific troll farm characters in usenet history,
e.g. "heartdoc andrew", "peeler", "quack andrew b. chung" <newsdemon.com>
ad nauseam (there are obviously thousands of usenet troll farm "regulars"
that have occupied every busy newsgroup since before noah built the ark),
so their total numbers must be in the many millions and expanding daily;

sysadmins have discussed counter-spam measures in other newsgroups, e.g.
news.admin.net-abuse.usenet,news.admin.peering,news.software.nntp, etc.,
but the subject of mass cross-posting and troll floods seems "taboo" for
some reason? surely, all the googlespam in the world pales by comparison

hmm... this popular long-retention newsserver "news.blueworldhosting.com"
alt.folklore.* articles oldest* newest
alt.folklore.computers 394965 02/09/2003 09/21/2024

How many of those almost-395000 articles were Thai-language spam entered
via Google Gropes in the months around the end of 2023 - start of 2024?
hmm... using these scoring rules:
=-9999 Message-ID: "googlegroups"
=-9998 References: "googlegroups"

news:alt.folklore.computers total oldest newest
message-id = googlegroups 31732 10/08/2004 02/21/2024
references = googlegroups 88212 10/09/2004 04/30/2024
both = googlegroups 119994

mostly spam and troll clutter, but only a few actual "thai spams";

p.s. it occurred to me that the "blueworldhosting" system administrator
(<***@blueworldhosting.com>) may have expunged some significant
portion of googlespam from their burgeoning article spool, so "thai spam"
could have been far worse, many tens of thousands wouldn't be surprising
in any newsgroup or on any news server that hadn't depeered googlegroups

I haven't seen ANY traffic in alt.folklore.computers since this (6 days
ago).
I don't know if E-S is to blame but, as seen from NIN, you've missed 23
posts in the "rise and fall" thread and one in the "monster sgi" thread.

Weird; my ES feed shows 21 in the last 7 days (excluding this thread) - all
Rise & Fall

(But nothing from 17th -21 = Wed Thu Fri) I just assumed things were quiet.

I get this group from Eternal September, and got four messages on the
17th, one on each of the 18th and 19th, and none on the 20th.

I just went out & back in to sylphfeed and still didn't see my own earlier
post!
Then I hit "Update Summary" and I now can see the "missing" articles.
(which I have actually read)

I've been digging through the posts from September 15th (at
least part of that day) up until about an hour ago on five
different news servers.

Managed to track down 30 posts, with only one server coming
up short - two posts MIA (one from the 15th, another from
today).

sep 16 13 posts
sep 17 4 posts
sep 18 1 post
sep 19 1 post
sep 20 no posts
sep 21 1 post

Whipped up some Python scripts just for this little project.
Fair warning though, they're fresh out of the oven and might
have a few bugs, so take my results with a grain of salt!

I must admit I couldn't see the post referenced by Lars at 12pm on the
15th, so maybe E-S has some posts that NIN doesn't.

very popular free newsserver, not tor-friendly, requires login, but the
very name of the server & nom de guerre of the sysadmin have
provenance . . .
I haven't seen ANY traffic in alt.folklore.computers since this (6 days

Thank you all for the responses to my query. After I turned the
threading display off on my Thunderbird newsreader, I found a dozen or
so items from the "The Rise And Fall Of Unix" thread, all marked read. I
wonder if I had accidentally killfiled that thread.

I fairly recently came back to USEnet after a multi-year absence; when I
left, I think I was using "rn". Thunderbird's newsreader responds to
many/most of the single-character commands, but I think there should
have been a "?" for "help" to list a one-page explanation of which
single-character commands exist. How do I undo a "k"?
